Tutoring and Mentoring

The College Essay

College Humanities Discourse Mentor: I help high school students prepare for higher education by cultivating an understanding of college-level discourse in the Humanities. Success in higher education requires that students become conversant in the language, resources, expectations, and culture of academia, which can differ significantly from their high school experiences. Yet, students are rarely significantly mentored in these areas when it comes to transitioning to college. To succeed and, beyond that, stand out in higher education requires more than proficient writing or study skills, which are too often the sole focus of high school college preparatory programs. It requires that students perform the cognitive leap to higher education, offer mentoring that prepares students for the specific culture and expectations of college-level humanities work, which is quite different from helping them ace the SAT or pass AP exams. I help students cultivate an intellectual presence and maturity, showing how to think, engage, and practice analytical depth and articulate sophisticated ideas.

While my mentorship offers something for students with any interest or intended major, the Humanities are unique for their daily reliance on discussion, strong writing, and personal reflection.
